"When it comes to buying drums and percussion, there are so many choices and too much confusion. BTE is so helpful that it doesn't seem to matter to them if you buy anything. This is an uncommonly
helpful resource."

Here's a typical example of buying advice
we give to our customers

BUYING ADVICE
Don't buy high end cymbals online
High end (i.e. expensive) cymbals are very inconsistent in quality from one cymbal to the next. Take two cymbals that are of the same brand and model, each costing the same amount, and you can love one and hate the other. As a result, it's impossible to predict that you will like a cymbal without hearing it first in person.

To counter this obstacle and persuade you to buy their expensive cymbals, some dealers provide sound clips of the exact cymbal you'd be buying. Forget it. You can't convey the beauty and power of a great cymbal through a pair of computer speakers. Listen to the cymbal in person.
Don't buy high end cymbals online.

For experienced drummers cymbals are very a personal matter -- and these days there are a lot of choices. We often tell beginning students and their parents to buy entry level cymbals, such as B8 and B8 Pro. This allows them time to play and listen until they develop an ear for what they like in a cymbal. In fact, we tell them they will probably upgrade their cymbals sooner than upgrade their drums. While drum sound can be improved using better head choices and skilled tuning, you can't do much to improve a bad sounding cymbal.

So to get started, entry level cymbals are a good and economical compromise.  They are consistent in the sense that they usually sound ok, that is, they're seldom great, but rarely horrible. That kind of consistency makes them a better bet to buy them online.

Whenever you're about to buy anything related to drums or percussion, it's worth it to call us for a price quote.
There’s a glut of information out there, and a lot of it is useless. Here’s an opportunity that will only take your time if and when you want information or a price.

We don't claim to be the cheapest
We have low prices, but we can’t be cheapest for everything. For some items we are, and in that case order from us. We’ll get you what you want as quickly as possible. But if we’re not cheapest, go ahead and order elsewhere. There’s no obligation, so why not give us a try?

PASSING IT FORWARD: WE'RE HELPING MAKE THE WORLD OF MUSIC MORE ACCESSIBLE
Free music industry and educational advice for teachers,
students and anyone else!

Here's a benefit having little to do with buying drums and equipment.  When you join the BTE Buying Group, you also tap into a wealth of free advice on nearly anything having to do with music and the music industry -- understanding music as a participant, knowledge about how the music industry works, musical styles, listening tips, how to form a musical group, advice on publicizing a band and getting gigs, musical styles...the list goes on and on. If we can't answer your questions, we'll certainly be able to point you in the right direction or tell you who to talk with.

When you've been around as long as we have, you get to know a lot about a few things, and a little about everything. So, while you may feel awkward at the idea of actually calling or emailing us,  go ahead and give it a try. It's our way of passing forward some of the knowledge we've received all these years.

WHO ARE WE?

Although there are several of us working behind the scenes, most of the time you’ll speak with me, Rob Zollman. Primarily a player and educator, my experience includes over 40 years of performing, teaching, band leading, managing and producing. But along the way I’ve paid close attention to what’s going on in the music industry, and made lots of good connections with dealers, distributors and other industry people. As a result I became able to purchase wholesale many of the items you might find in nearly any drum and percussion products catalogue.

I also wrote the book Whole Music Drumming, a unique, comprehensive and musical approach to learn drumming. As an educator, I’ve taught over a thousand students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in music. Several can be found on jazz, classical and pop recordings.

I’ve got some well-founded views about what’s going on in percussion education and music education in general. If you’re interested, check out my upcoming blog and my Whole Music Learning website. Give me a call at 802 345-1714 and I’ll be glad to chat with you.
